We are one of Chicago’s largest independent music shops catering to the largest member of the String Family, the Doublebass. We sell basses from the least expensive [that meet our minimum quality requirements] to several select instruments that are valued at over $50,000.00. All of our instruments have new professional-level strings and almost all have an upgraded endpin except in cases where the factory endpins are of exceptional quality.
For over twenty-five years, Steve’s doublebass journey has taken him on captivating musical adventures spanning from the bustling streets of Chicago to far-flung destinations like New Zealand, Japan, Kenya, and Germany. As a versatile musician, he skillfully navigates the worlds of symphony orchestras and jazz, lending his rhythmic prowess to the vibrant compositions of Isaac “Redd” Holt, the acclaimed drummer of the Ramsey Lewis Trio. Not confined to a single genre, Steve’s artistic pursuits extend to Klezmer, Bluegrass, and various folk styles, embracing the rich tapestry of musical expression.
Recognized as an esteemed educator and presenter, Steve has graced prestigious events such as the Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic, Illinois Music Educators convention, Kentucky Music Educators convention, and the conventions of the International Society of Bassists. His dedication to teaching is evident through his exceptional private lessons and his editorial work on the captivating “Young Bassists’ Page” for BASS WORLD, the esteemed journal of the International Society of Bassists.
Beyond his musical endeavors, Steve’s love for cultural exploration led him to receive a Fulbright Memorial Fund scholarship for a captivating three-week study tour of Japan. His expertise as a studio teacher was acknowledged by the Illinois Chapter of ASTA, where he was honored with the title of Outstanding Studio Teacher.
With an unwavering commitment to cater to the needs of doublebass enthusiasts, Steve proudly oversees the largest shop in the vibrant Chicago Area, serving as a haven for musicians seeking exceptional repair, customization, and maintenance services for their beloved instruments. While music is his primary passion, Steve finds joy in other pursuits such as playing hockey, ice skating, reading, cooking, and engaging in political discussions, making for a well-rounded and captivating personality
